WOMBATT Fatigue Prediction and Prevention

We all know that we can detect fatigue or tiredness in a person we know well. How many times has someone said to us " You sound tired"? This is an experience common to us all. Yet up until now, technology has not been able to copy that innate human ability. The European Space Agency (ESA) found that one of the key risk factors for their future manned missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond is the fatigue of the astronauts, which has caused a number near catastrophic mistakes and accidents ever since the Apollo missions, both in the US and Russian space programmes. ESA searched the world for a commercial fatigue management technology that could be used in Space, but found none suitable. Yet ESA scientists of course knew that humans have the ability to detect growing fatigue from a persons voice - especially a person they know well - which would be perfect for use in a long range Space mission. So WOMBATT's scientists developed an algorithm which could do this, inventing an artificial intelligence fatigue prediction algorithm which was then tested and proven by ESA for use in Space. WOMBATT proceeded to commercialise the algorithm by combining it with a smartphone App, WOMBATT-VOZ, which put this advanced Space age technology into the pocket of anyone who has a smartphone, tablet or computer. The voice signal is, however, exceedingly complicated, and the smart phones of even five or six years ago did not have the microphone fidelity and microprocessor power required to detect the tiny variations in the voice which denote growing fatigue. So not only was the WOMBATT-VOZ fatigue prediction solution made possible by the ongoing march of Space exploration, but also by the relentless development of mobile phone and personal computer technology over the past few years. WOMBATT-VOZ works by analysing the voice muscles. Muscle tiredness cannot be faked. If we run ten miles our muscles will be tired by the end of the run - no way to fake that. It is the same with tiredness caused by fatigue - usually but not always due to lack of sleep. We have all had the experience of feeling the sore muscles of our neck, shoulders and back when we are fatigued. That information is expressed from the body to the outside world in the form of the voice, captured by the ultra high fidelity microphones of a modern smartphone, and analysed for fatigue by the AI driven fatigue prediction algorithm proven for Space by the Space Agency. The result is an highly advanced scientific system which can predict the fatigue of the user up to five hours ahead, and with up to 90% accuracy once the algorithm learns the unique voice characteristics of the individual user. This changes the whole field of fatigue management. Older technologies can only detect fatigue as, or just before, it occurs, leaving no time to take preventative action. WOMBATT-VOZ, by looking so many hours ahead, gives both the user and management sufficient warning to take remedial action, thereby preventing the potential fatigue incident from ever actually happening.
