DESCRIPTION OF TOURS AND SPECIAL EVENTSSUNDAY, SEPT. 21, 2008 Professional tour guides lead this lazy, relaxing float trip on the Colorado River through the scenic Black Canyon. No need to worry about rapids—there are none! This is a flat-water float that allows you to take in the wonders of nature in one of the most scenic areas of the country. Eagles and bighorn sheep are possible photographic targets along the way. The sheer canyon walls provide the perfect backdrop. Tour guides will point out interesting sights along the way, including unexpected waterfalls and bubbling springs. They’ll tell you about Native American lore and legends. You’ll stop in a deep cove of the river to enjoy lunch, which is provided. Note: Climbing in and out of the raft requires some physical dexterity. Please wear comfortable and safe shoes. Plan on getting splashed at times, so quick drying clothes are recommended. Swimsuits are allowed. MONDAY, SEPT. 22, 2008 The perfect trip for wildlife lovers, this tour begins at the Mirage’s Secret Garden of Siegfried and Roy and the Dolphin Habitat, and then moves to Mandalay Bay’s Shark Reef, the newest wildlife attraction in Las Vegas. The Secret Garden puts you up close and personal with white lions, white tigers, black panthers, snow leopards and an Asian elephant—all in an exotic jungle setting. A guided tour will help you enjoy and appreciate the remarkable Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at the Dolphin Habitat. The Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay will offer you a close-up look at aquatic life and rare reptiles—from 13 species of sharks to five rare golden crocodiles, among only 12 known to exist. There are also tropical fish, reptiles, marine invertebrates and rays to admire in almost two million gallons of seawater. TUESDAY, SEPT. 23, 2008 Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area is the dramatic western backdrop to the Las Vegas Valley. Explore the panoramic vistas of red, maroon and white sandstone buttresses, the rugged geologic history at your fingertips. Can you imagine this area once being under the sea? You’ll take a guided coach tour along a 13-mile loop, from scenic point to scenic point. Guests will be allowed to exit the bus and take pictures at various points of interest. The tour will be led by a professional tour guide with extensive knowledge of one of the most beautiful canyons in the Southwest United States. Note: Comfortable, safe and close-toed shoes should be worn. Do not wear sandals or high heels. There will be some walking on uneven surfaces. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR AWARDS LUNCHEON Join the National Mining Association as it salutes the Department of the Interior’s Office of Surface Coal Mining (OSM) Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Reclamation awards and the Bureau of Land Management’s 2008 Hardrock Mining awards. Initiated in 1986, the OSM program publicly recognizes outstanding coal mine reclamation and highlights exemplary reclamation techniques. Begun in 2003 by BLM, the Hardrock Mineral Environmental Award recognizes a demonstrated track record of successfully meeting or exceeding federal, state and local reclamation requirements with minimal oversight. The Hardrock Mineral Award for Community Outreach and Economic Security recognizes the economic benefits of mineral development with an emphasis on successful coordination with local and regional stakeholders. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 24, 2008 Hoover Dam is one of the most inspiring man-made wonders of the world, and the gateway to Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in America. Your tour guide will share interesting facts about Las Vegas and points of interest along the 45-minute trip to Hoover Dam. You will enjoy spectacular views of the Las Vegas Valley as you wind through the mountains to your destination. Your tour guide will lead you through the interior of this engineering marvel and provide you with interesting facts about the facility. The new Visitors Center provides a breathtaking view of the Dam and Black Canyon below, where the mighty Colorado River begins its journey. Audiovisual and multimedia exhibits are yours to explore. SENTINELS OF SAFETY AWARDS LINCHEON This luncheon will honor the 2007 recipients of the Department of Labor’s coveted Sentinels of Safety Awards. These awards are presented each year by the National Mining Association and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, to those mining operations throughout the country that have demonstrated an exemplary safety record. Sentinel of Safety winners are those mines that have worked the most employee-hours without experiencing a lost-time injury. The competition requires a minimum of at least 4,000 injury-free hours and winning operations typically far exceed that total. |
